About Jaitu

The ancient city of Jaitu is located in Faridkot district of Punjab, India. This historical town is home to numerous popular temples of Hindus and three mainly ancient Gurudwaras of Punjab, Jaitu is also known as the hometown of two popular personalities, i.e. Shri Gurdial Singh Rahi and renowned Kavishar Shri Deepak Jatoi. It is located at a distance of 30 km from the town of Bathinda, 18 km from the city of Kotakpura and 22 km away from the city Bhagta Bhaika.

Also called as Jaito and Gangsar Jaitu, the city’s primary occupation is agriculture and is known for the surplus production of wheat and paddy crops. Jaitu has been popular for its Bazaars or Markets which are locally called Mandis and is home to over 30 rice industrial units and three cotton industrial units along with a few timber factories as well. Origin of the name “Jaitu”

The city of “Gangsar” Jaitu derived the name Jaitu from an old folk tale according to which once Guru Gobind Singh Ji reached this place and while he was sitting on a sand bank, there he saw a saint there who was crying. Then he inquired about why he was crying and saint answered that he misplaced his bowl in the Ganges River. Then when Guru got to know about his trouble, he immediately shot an arrow which hit the land and water start coming off from the ground. Subsequently Gurudwaras were built on both places, i.e. on the sand bank where the Guru Gobind Singh was sitting and the place where he shot the arrow and a lake was made. It is also acknowledged that Jaitu was a little village established by Baba Jaitu and was later named after Baba Jaitu. Also, Baba Jaitu Fair is also organized here annually.

Demography of Jaitu

As per 2001 census of India Jaitu had a total population of 33,465 inhabitants out of which which there are 53% males and 47% females. The average literacy rate of the town is 62% which is precisely lesser than the Indian national average of 74% and there were 67% literate males and 56% are educated females. Moreover, there is 13% part of the whole populace is that of children below the age of 6 years.

Geography of Jaitu

The city of Jaitu is located in the northwestern zone of India and is an area that comes under the Indo-Gangetic alluvial plains and these plains according to macro area perspective constitute a part of the huge Satluj Ganga plain. The Geographical co-ordinates of this town are 30.450893°N 74.882898°E and it is located at the standard altitude of 201 metres or 660 ft. The bordering districts to Jaitu are Barnala, Malout, Muktsar, Moga and Bathinda which are in Punjab and Sirsa which is district in Haryana state. The border of the Punjab state which is Rajasthan is just one hour drive from this city Jaitu. Presently there is not any river that passes the district, except a few drains that are formed during heavy rainfall and thus are used as original drainages. Jaitu experiences semi arid type of climates having high deviations from summer to winter months’ temperatures. The average yearly rainfall recorded here is in between 20 mm to 40 mm. In summer, maximum temperature can be 45°C or 122°F and the minimum temperature of winter can be 5°C or 41°F. The climate remains dry normally but can become moist from mid of May to the end of summer in August; the reason behind this humidity is the farmers growing and irrigating crops.

Transportation in Jaitu

Jaitu is properly linked to the nearby main towns of Punjab, such as Amritsar, Bathinda, Chandigarh, etc. through the transport facilities that are made available by Punjab Transport Undertaking (PTU) and PEPSU. Moreover, the city has its own railway station, i.e. Jaitu Railway Station which is located on the Northern Railway Zone of Indian Railways. There are many trains plying between Jaitu and  cities like Delhi, Bathinda, Mumbai . The closest airport to this town is that of Bathinda which was constructed fully since August 2012 and is pending to be launched officially by the Central government and then only will be the closest airport to Jaitu in 50 km area to connect it to the other main towns of the country.

Popular Personalities from Jaitu

There are various well known writers and freedom fighters that hailed from this town of Jaitu like, Seth Ram Nath, Gurdial Singh Rahi, Deepak Jaitoi, etc. Seth Ram Nath was freedom fighters of India and worked with some famous leaders of Indian Freedom like, Acharya Kirplani, Lal bahadur Shashtri, Partap Singh Kairon and Giani Jail Singh. He was also the minister under the PEPSU Government. Another noted personality Gurdial Singh Rahi is a renowned novelist and recipient of  approximately 17 awards including the Jnanpith Award (in 1999),the Padma Shri (1998), the Shiromani Sahitkar Award, the Punjab Sahitya Akademi Award (1979), the Soviet Land Nehru Award (1986), the Bhai Veer Singh Fiction Award (1992) and others. His works includes Pauh phutale ton pehlan, Anhoe (1966), Addh Chanani Raat (1972), Anhe Ghore Da Daan (1976) and Parsa (1991) to name a few. Deepak Jaitoi, a popular Punjabi Ghazal Poem writer and song writer, Dharamvir Singh Bhatia, a well known Ayurvedic doctor, educationist, social worker and politician also hailed from Jaitu. Mr. Gurbachan Singh “Patanga” a renowned writer and patriot was also from Jaitu. Master Karta Ram is also a freedom fighter and he lived for one month in the Jaitu jail with Jawaharlal Nehru. Presently, he is 82 years old.
